What is Trauma and PTSD?

Trauma is an emotional response to a distressing or life-threatening event, such as an accident, natural disaster, violence, or abuse. When these experiences lead to ongoing distress and impairment, it may be diagnosed as Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Common symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Re-experiencing the trauma: Intrusive memories, flashbacks, nightmares, and intense distress when reminded of the trauma.

  • Avoidance: Avoiding thoughts, feelings, places, people, or activities that remind you of the trauma.

  • Negative thoughts and feelings: Persistent fear, anger, guilt, shame, difficulty experiencing positive emotions, and negative thoughts about yourself or the world.

  • Hyperarousal: Being easily startled, feeling on edge, difficulty sleeping, and experiencing irritability or outbursts.

How DBT Can Help with Trauma and PTSD:

DBT skills can be particularly helpful for managing trauma and PTSD by:

  • Increasing Mindfulness: Learn to ground yourself in the present moment, reducing the power of intrusive thoughts and flashbacks.

  • Improving Distress Tolerance: Develop coping strategies to manage intense emotions and navigate triggers without resorting to unhealthy behaviors.

  • Regulating Emotions: Understand and process your emotions related to the trauma, reducing emotional reactivity and increasing emotional stability.

  • Enhancing Interpersonal Effectiveness: Build healthy relationships, communicate effectively, and establish boundaries, fostering a sense of safety and connection.
