Could it be ADHD? Understanding Symptoms, Testing, and Treatment

Writer: Salwa AlbaitiSalwa Albaiti

Do you find yourself struggling with focus, organization, or impulsivity? You might be wondering if it's Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). At New Horizons Therapy NY, we understand the challenges of ADHD and offer support and strategies to help you thrive.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It often begins in childhood but can continue into adulthood.

ADHD Symptoms:

  • Inattention: Difficulty focusing, easily distracted, forgetfulness, disorganization

  • Hyperactivity: Restlessness, fidgeting, difficulty staying still

  • Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, interrupting others, difficulty waiting your turn

ADHD Test & Diagnosis:

While there's no single ADHD test, diagnosis often involves a comprehensive evaluation, including:

  • Clinical interview: Discussing your symptoms and history with a mental health professional.

  • Symptom checklists: Rating scales to assess the severity of ADHD symptoms.

  • Neuropsychological testing: May be used to assess cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

ADD vs ADHD:

The term ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) is outdated. Today, ADHD is the umbrella term with different presentations:

  • Inattentive type: Primarily inattentive symptoms

  • Hyperactive-impulsive type: Primarily hyperactive and impulsive symptoms

  • Combined type: Both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms

ADHD Symptoms in Women:

ADHD can present differently in women, sometimes leading to underdiagnosis. Women may be more likely to experience inattentive symptoms and may struggle with internal restlessness rather than outward hyperactivity.

ADHD Treatments:

  • Therapy: We focus on executive function skills (planning, organization, time management) and attention-building strategies using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you manage ADHD challenges.

  • Medication: Medication can be helpful for some individuals with ADHD.

Important Note: We do not provide ADHD testing or prescribe medication. We can provide referrals to qualified professionals for:

  • Psychiatric Consultation: To confirm an ADHD diagnosis and discuss medication management.

  • Neuropsychological Testing: For a comprehensive assessment, which may be necessary for academic accommodations (school, college admissions, standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, LSAT, MCAT, GRE).
